Decals, Stickers, and Stamps
Canadian Oil Companies Ltd. were a leader in advertising and took full advantage of the power and good will
a well planned promotional giveaway can produce. They also believed that a good ad program should be recognizable at a glance--a picture is as good as a thousand words. On the back cover of the 1933 En-ar-co Oil News the Boy and Slate window sticker (above) was offered-free for the asking from any En-ar-co dealer or Canadian Oil Companies Limited ,Service Station. It was 4 3/4" X 3 1/2" and was a very thin gummed paper and probably was not very durable.I was lucky enough to find this example for my collection. They are quite rare today, probably due to the fact it was a short -lived offerng--I have only seen them offered in Canada on that one booklet cover and the poor quality of the paper would not have endured any rough handling or improper storage.Besides -- who would bother saving one of these for the future? I glad that at least one person did !!!
*UPDATE ---I have since found a 1936 En-ar-co Oil News booklet with an ad on the back cover for an identical sticker
with the saying:  SAFETY FIRST ! DON"T RUN OTHERS DOWN , and the notation '' choice of four slogans ! ''
Do you know the other slogans available in Canada ?
At the same time (1933) the then parent company ,National Refining Co. Ltd.
offered a very similar but not quite identical sticker with 3 different enarcograms
(1)Some love to dance, others dance to love
(2)    3R's of education----Rah ! Rah ! Rah
(3) Many are dead but they won't lie down!
The Girl In the Rose

Much more common are the above examples that I call 'The Girl In the Rose' .What many don't realize is the fact that there
were two versions available, the blonde and a redhead. in my opinion the blonde is the earliest , but as I have not seen them offered anywhere that would help to date them , that is only a guess. My best attempt at putting a date to them comes from the paper backing of the blonde version. Along with the application instructions it shows a logo used by Canadian Oil Ltd.in the early 40's.(the circle rose with the "GASOLINE / MOTOR OIL"wings) Produced by Canada Decalmania Co.Ltd.(Toronto) the instructions specify it is a water transfer to be applied to the inside of your window . The redhead is on a clear backing with a separate instruction sheet and was made by E.S.&A.Robinson Ltd. Leaside (Toronto) Ontario.
I sometimes have extras of these decals available , E-mail me and I may be able to get you one or both.No promises tho.
Stamps for Your Scrap Book

This giveaway was probably aimed toward children.During 1932 one or more of these stamps ,with different sayings , were printed on the back cover of Canadian Oil's En-ar-co Oil News booklets. As I have only two 1932 booklets I can not be sure how long this offer endured but I do know they were on the July and December 1932 issues but disappeared during 1933.
