Outboard Motor Oil
and Power Mower Motor
Oil
Canadian Oil Companies list of
products would consist of several long pages. A particular favourite of
mine were the outboard motor oil containers. This oil was used in all 2-cycle
engines and often the rear of the tin showed a power lawn mower .
To the best of my knowledge these
were not marketed in the "Boy and Slate" days preceeding 1939 .The image
above shows all the outboard oil tins that I am aware of .All seemed to
be marketed only in the quart size but I am sure larger bulk sizes were
available to commercial customers .
The earliest is the yellow and
black ,produced sometime after 1939 and continuing in this package until
1952 .Next came the red and yellow packaging used from 1952 to 1958. Two
versions of this can differed only on the back side. The middle two quarts
would have been marketed from 1958 to 1962. All of the above oil were labeled
as products of Canadian Oil Companies
Ltd. Following the purchase of this company by Shell Oil Company of Canada
in late 1962 the side panel of the last two containers shown
now read "Canadian Oil Company
- -A division of Shell Canada ".
I cannot be sure but I suspect
that plastic packaging was in it's infancy in the late 50's were
not fully accepted at this time , leading to the use of both plastic and
metal containers . I believe that 1967 was the last year the "White
Rose " logo was used .
