Handy Oilers
Another long-running Canadian Oil Companies give away program involved
small multi-purpose cans of utility oil.The short stubby can on the left
advertises NATIONAL CARBONLESS MOTOR OIL and WHITE ROSE GASOLINE
and is the earliest I have seen, probably circa 1910-1915.Next is the tall
thin "NATIONAL MOTOR OIL" with the Quality First seal(logo),circa -late
teens.Another variation of this can omits the word National . Next came
a similar but shorter & a bit larger diameter can with the Boy &
Slate and "ENARCO MOTOR OIL"..Two versions of this tin differ only on the
back panel wording;the earliest say NATIONAL LIGHT "OIL" ,the newer
says NATIONAL LIGHT " KEROSENE".This name change occurred in publications
in January 1923. A possible later variation may list ENARCO GEAR
"COMPOUND" changing to" LUBRICANT " in 1930.After 1939 a flat 4 oz. White
Rose Handy Oil were utilized ; the earliest have a metal spout ,followed
by a similar tin with a red plastic spout. Finally a change to the new "wedge
shaped logo" in 1953 brought out an all plastic 1 oz. HANDY OIL.
