One of the favourite
pieces of EN-AR-CO memorabilia in my collection is this pop-up
game.It is made from heavy cardboard much like the Boy and Slate calendars. It
is scored on the front side , across the slate, on the level of the boy's
hands. This effectively allows the top portion to fold back double. An elastic
band (hooked on the hands, and running behind the slate) makes the top
'spring- loaded'. I believe another rubber band (not shown) stretched
across the center of the bulls-eye and into slits on the outer edge of
the slate.Pulling this band back and firing a projectile thru the
bulls-eye would hit the back of the boys head and cause it to pop up.
I have seen only one other of these pieces and have not been able to date it.However No-Knock Gasoline was first marketed in 1934 and the Boy and Slate was being phased out in the early 40's . The Trick in the Wedding Ring Puzzle is to get both rings on the same (or different) loop , without untying , cutting or breaking the string.Luckily I received it in it's original envelope which had the instructions printed on it. This logo of the rose with the White Rose script printed horizontally below was used briefly from 1939- into the early 40's . The En-ar-co Auto-checker Tour Across Canada Game is printed in four colours , has a metal spinner and four disc automobiles.Lithographed in beautiful colours on heavy durable paper . It represents automobiles touring from Toronto, headquarters of Canadian Oil Companies , Limited , to Halifax, N.S., across Canada to Calgary , and back to Petrolia , Ont. , the Home of the En-ar-co Refinery . Reverse side is a checker board printed regulation red and black . On each square is printed a snappy En-ar-co-gram which insures a laugh with every move. Children have hours of fun playing this game . Grown folks too will like it . Originally copyrighted in 1919 it was revised for the 1926 and 1929 versions. |
